Sylvia Grisham, Founder & Executive Director
When I became a mother for the first time, with the birth of my daughter Cristina, my professional focus changed; I left the corporate world behind and began my career in early childhood education.
During my tenure at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, my course work leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree focused on the areas of Sociology, Spanish, and Dance. My senior thesis was on the need to develop intergenerational programs to assist new parents in the journey of parenting while involving the guidance of the older generation in this most important task. The premise of my thesis was that the rearing of children is a communal effort that can bring joy to each of the generations. In 1990 through 1991, I completed additional coursework in child development and early childhood education programs.
I was first licensed as a preschool center director in Los Angeles County in 1977. As my family grew with the birth of my son Danny, we moved into Orange County where I designed and implemented a School Age program. In 1985, we settled into Carlsbad where I have been licensed as both a large family day care provider and as a center director. In 1989, my husband, Jim and I opened Carlsbad Village Children's Center and have worked together ever since. The experience in providing a home away from home for hundreds of children over the years has led us to the development of Children's Villages Child Development Center.
It is my sincere hope that your family will experience the joy of childhood, the pleasures of parenting, and the membership in our community learning together.
